Sexual stimulation can be tactile (for example, by touching the penis) or mental (for example, by having sexual fantasies). Sexual stimulation or sexual arousal generates electrical impulses along the nerves going to the penis and causes the nerves to release nitric oxide, which in turn increases the production of cyclic GMP (cGMP) in the smooth muscle cells of the corpora cavernosa. The cGMP causes the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax and allow rapid blood flow into the penis. The incoming blood fills the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. This type of device is sometimes referred to as penis pump and may be used just prior to sexual intercourse. Several types of FDA approved vacuum therapy devices are available with a doctor's prescription. Retrograde ejaculation is common in males with diabetes who suffer from diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage). This is due to problems with the nerves in the bladder and the bladder neck that allow the ejaculate to flow backward. In other men, retrograde ejaculation occurs after operations on the bladder neck or prostate, or after certain abdominal operations. In addition, certain medications, particularly those used to treat mood disorders, may cause problems with ejaculation. Men with a rare heart condition known as long QT syndrome should not take vardenafil since this may lead to abnormal heart rhythms. The QT interval is the time it takes for the heart's muscle to recover after it has contracted. The QT interval is measured with an electrocardiogram (EKG). Some people have longer than normal QT intervals, and they may develop potentially life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms, especially when given certain medications. Since long QT syndrome can be inherited, men with a family history of long QT syndrome should not take vardenafil. Furthermore, vardenafil is not recommended for men who are taking medications that can affect the QT interval such as quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex), procainamide (Pronestyl; Procan-SR; Procanbid), amiodarone (Cordarone), and sotalol (Betapace). How Common Is Erectile Dysfunction? According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 5% of 40-year-old men and between 15% and 25% of 65-year-old men experience ED on a long-term basis. Effectiveness of tadalafil in these studies was assessed using a sexual function questionnaire. Study participants also were asked if they were able to achieve vaginal penetration and to maintain erections long enough for successful intercourse. Besides treating the underlying causes such as potassium deficiency or arsenic contamination of drinking water, the first line treatment of erectile dysfunction consists of a trial of PDE5 inhibitor drugs (the first of which was sildenafil or Viagra). In some cases, treatment can involve prostaglandin tablets in the urethra, injections into the penis, a penile prosthesis, a penis pump or vascular reconstructive surgery.

The choice of the MEMO partnership was made in respect to existing know how and competence developed through the AEMMED project. Capitalizing on the experience and lessons learned the AEMMED core partners decided to add new constituents into the partnership in order to have a more flexible and efficient team and introduced new important players to the MEMO project. As such the Leading Role is undertaken by the Port of Piraeus, the most significant port of Greece with a leading role in environmental management among Greek ports and considerable investments and capacity in managing large projects. All the partners have extensive demonstrated experiences in managing and implementing transnational projects. The Municipal Port Authority of Hersonissos, has already a successful installation of an AIS data center from the AEMMED project. MEDSOS and the EC BIC of Attika both have significant experience in implementing EU funded projects, (INTERREG IIIB MEDOCC/ AEMMED, INTERREG IIIB CADSES/ WAREMA and SEEDS, INTERREG IIIC COPRANET, the LIFE-Environment “Collaborative environmental regeneration of Port Cities: Elefsina Bay 2020”). FEPORTS, the Region of Liguria and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Province of Marseille, also bring experience from AEMMED and SECUREMED projects, whereas new elements and experiences in the partnership are brought in by the Port of Koper (Slovenia) and by the Port of Venice in Italy since they play a strategic role in their region.
